The 2013-2014 Family Math program for third grade students and their families was in full swing during October. Mrs. Carpenter and Ms. Hannah facilitated the program for the many third grade families who participated. Family Math meets on Tuesday evenings in the School #2 All-Purpose Room, for two, five-week sessions each school year. Ninety minute sessions challenge the participants with an array of hands-on, math related activities. Problem solving is a large part of each Family Math session and supports the classroom math curriculum.
"Venn diagrams" got participants thinking at sign-in. "Estimation Jars" loaded with edibles tantalized eager estimators. With each activity, skepticism turned into enthusiasm. Calculators were turned upside down to reveal secret messages, and who knew that math would involve throwing objects across the cafeteria? "Cut-a-Card" proved to be a little more complicated than expected, but together, parents and students persevered to find a solution. And did you know you can read stories about math?
Overall, everyone had a blast. Mrs. Carpenter and Ms. Hannah would like to thank all of the families who participated for making each evening such a success!
