Southampton Township School #3 sixth graders attended a three day environmental education trip to Medford’s YMCA Camp Ockanickon on October 10th, 11th, and 12th. This is an annual outing of three days and two nights that every student had the opportunity to attend. While at camp, sixth grade students were provided the opportunity to learn more about the environment in the picturesque setting of camp. All classes were set outdoors as students learned while interacting with their environment. Students accepted responsibility and developed a bit of independence while at camp. Students prepared the tables, set out food, and worked together to clean up after meals. Teamwork at its finest!
The environmental education trip was part of our sixth grade curriculum. English, science, music and social studies were among the subjects taught at camp. Students engaged in cooperative learning activities while experiencing discovery-based education in an outdoor setting. Students participated in the residential camp experience and cared for their own belongings. Members of the Southampton School #3 teaching staff and Camp Ockanickon staff led all activities. At camp there was something to spark everyone’s interest. Some of the activities that campers participated in during the day included archery, low ropes courses, Pineland’s ecology, canoeing, outdoor fitness, compass orienteering, and much more.
As evening approached, our campers were tired but not too exhausted to have some fun. On Wednesday evening our campers enjoyed a campfire and entertainment provided by the Camp Ockanickon counselors. On Thursday evening, all campers were entertained by skits written and performed by our very own campers. The skits were creative and lively, and fun was had by all. The residential camp experience, over the course of three days, provided students with the opportunity to become better acquainted with their classmates, parent chaperones, teachers, and administrators. Southampton’s fifth grade students are already looking forward to their trip next year!
