Every day, forty children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the United States. Diabetes is one of the most costly, chronic diseases, and children who have T1D will never outgrow the illness. In order to stay alive, they must take multiple insulin injections, or use an insulin pump, as well as test their blood sugar by pricking their finger about six times a day. Insulin is not a cure.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Kids Walk is a great way for children to learn the importance of a healthy lifestyle, while more importantly, learning about type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This program also helps children learn what it means to make a difference by raising money for T1D research and the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
Second grade teacher, Jonathan Capocci began the JDRF/Southampton School #1 partnership in 2013. During the inaugural year, School #1 raised $4,424.84. Since its inception, our school has raised a grand total of $11,661.08 in only 3 years! This is astounding evidence of the community involvement and love for one another shared in Southampton Township.
The entire School #1 student body, staff, a parent volunteers participate in the School #1 JDRF Walk. Students and staff receive pledges for donations from family members and friends for the walk. The students and staff enjoy a very pleasant stroll that begins out the back of the building, proceeds down Warrior Way, to Main Street and then around the block to Pleasant Street and back into the school.
Congratulations to Mr. Capocci for recommending this worthwhile and educational community service event to Principal Danfield and for his coordination of the JDRF walk. Congratulations and thank you also go out to our fabulous School #1 students and staff for their community service!
Mr. Capocci is extremely grateful for the support given to this event.
