Students, parents and distinguished guests thoroughly enjoyed the 2013 School #1 Arbor Day celebration on Friday, April 26th! It was a clear, mild, and sunny day for this year's event. Absolutely, perfect weather!
The entire School #1 student body were the star performers of the program. Mrs. Janine Metzger, School #1 Music Teacher was the Arbor Day Coordinator and she directed the students as they sang songs, and read information about the importance of Arbor Day.
School #1 Principal. Sharon Danfield was the Master of Ceremonies and her duties included introducing the distinguished guests that were in attendance. The honored guests included members Mr. Joseph Laufer, Mr. Ronald Heston, Mr. James Minster, and Mayor James Young of the Southampton Township Committee. Southampton Township Administrator Kathleen Hoffman accompanied the township committeemen. In addition, members of the Southampton Shade Tree Commission, Mrs. Debbie Hodgson, and Mrs. Donna Facenda were in attendance. Mr. Ken Sullivan and Mrs. Carolyn Sullivan who annually donate trees for the program were amongst the special guests. Mr. Thomas Gerber, and Mr. Sammy Moore, from the New Jersey Forest Service participated as well. However, the distinguished guest who received the biggest and loudest ovation of the day was none other than Smokey The Bear!
This year's program kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance, introduction of the guests by Mrs. Danfield, the singing of the song "This Land Is Your Land" by the School #1 students, and the singing of an Arbor Day related song by each grade level. Special student speakers introduced each song.
Following the student performances, Mayor James Young read an Arbor Day Proclamation and Mr. Thomas Gerber spoke on behalf of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The program concluded with remarks from Mrs. Danfield, School #1 Principal.
