Our 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year Recognition Committee met on December 15th to select one teacher from each building as a recipient of the “Teacher of the Year” Award.
We are pleased to announce that this year's recipients are Ms. Miranda Fasler, School #1 Kindergarten Teacher, Mrs. Theresa Gerber, School #2 RtI Teacher, and Mr. Ron Nober, School #3 Technology Teacher!
This is a very prestigious award for the teachers selected. The recipients chosen each year are selected from a large pool of nominees. This year twenty-two teachers throughout the school district were nominated for consideration. There are many worthy candidates. Therefore, the Teachers of the Year serve as representatives for their colleagues in the district.
One of the great joys of being an educator is knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of the children you come to love. Being selected for this recognition is tangible validation that you are doing so.
An essential part of the process is for the staff, parents and students to participate in the selection process by nominating teachers.
Teachers selected for this prestigious honor must have distinguished themselves by demonstrating excellence in the following areas:
-
Having the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues
-
Using effective instructional techniques and methods
-
Establishing a productive classroom climate and rapport with students
-
Developing feelings of self-worth and love of learning in students
-
Demonstrating leadership in educational activities at the school, district, and/or state and national level
Mrs. Kristine Bertulis, School #2/#3 Assistant Principal, was the chairperson for the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee comprised of various stakeholders in the school district. They reviewed all of the teachers nominated by students, parents, and staff members.
One of the interesting features of the selection process and composition of the committee is the fact that the previous year's Teacher of the Year for each building serve on the committee and are able to see how the selection process works. Thus, they get to see first hand the process that was used for their selection and have the honor of participating in the selection of their successors. Unfortunately, our 2016 School #1 Teacher of the Year Recipient left Southampton at the beginning of this school year to accept an administrative position, and Mrs. Danielle Madison, the 2016 School #2 Teacher of Year recipient is on maternity leave. So neither of them were able to participate.
This year's committees was comprised of the following members:
Parent - Mrs. Michele Capraro
Parent - Maile Irion
Parent - Mrs. Deadra Melillo
School #3 Teacher of the Year - Mrs. Erin Mundy, 2016 Teacher of the Year
Board of Education - Mr. Jeffrey Hicks, Board of Education President
Administration - Mr. James Winkelspecht, School #1 Principal
Administration - Mrs. Jennifer Horner, School #2/#3 Principal
Chairperson - Mrs. Kristine Bertulis, School #2/#3 Assistant Principal
Congratulations to Ms. Fasler, Mr. Gerber and Mr. Nober for being selected at this year's 2016-2017 Teachers of Year! Thank you for the teaching excellence you provide in your classrooms everyday.
